You certainly do not want to “bump” into this beast in a dark alleyway. To ensure its continue dominance in motorsport’s most prestigious endurance race, Le Mans 24 Hours, Audi, the brand with 4 Rings, unveiled a brand new LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype 1) race car, the Audi R18. Built out carbon fiber and powered by a 3.7-liter V6 TDI, the new car continued the diesel engine tradition of Audi Motorsport from 2006. Another addition will be a brand new 6-speed transmission. Though Audi did not want to go into the specific, the smaller engine and new transmission equate to effective performance on the course. However, the most notable is the new silhouette of the R18. For the first time since 1999, the R18 will feature a closed cockpit arrangement again to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. One other is the new headlight, or in this case, headlights. The first to consist only LEDs, the daytime mode creates the numeral “1”, as in the Audi’s historic number. The car’ racing debut will be at Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours on May 8th of next year. Audi plans to have a total of 3 Audi R18 in the 2011 Le Mans with Audi Sport Team Joest. One question remains. With its army green paint job, doesn’t the Audi R18 have some semblances with Zaku Mobile Suit from the popular anime series Gundam?
