Painter, sculptor, film director, installations by artist Julian Schnabel are exact reflections of his larger-than-life persona. From his acclaimed directorial debut with bio-pic Basquiat to his Pepto-Bismol pink townhouse in New York City, Schnabel, like most artists, drew inspirations from his life experiences, except his re-interpretations are usually hulking and apologetic. In kicking off a new 2-year partnership with Mercedes-Benz and its Maybach division, Schnabel unveiled his latest installation, “Queequeq – The Maybach Sculpture.” Casted in bronze over stainless steel armatures, the 3,280-lb sculpture, depicting the character from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, comes in 2 segments. Its debut was part of Maybach Night, a charity auction of five Julian Schnabel works took place last evening to benefit the J/P Haitian Relief Organization Foundation, a non-for-profit started by close friend of Schnabel, actor Sean Penn. In addition, the event coincide with Schnabel’s particpation of the mentorship program by Wilhelm & Karl Maybach Foundation, for the next 2 years. Like previous program participant, photographer David LaChapelle, the foundation will create various initiatives in assisting young artists at the guidance of Schnabel. In meantime, “Queequeq – The Maybach Sculpture” will take part in a slew of Julian Schnabel retrospective this coming new year.
